Settler tour, August 2

On August 2nd, I was there for my second settler tour, during my second summer in Palestine with ISM. Pictures can often say more than words, so I will post some photos from the day, along with some short commentary.

The tour starts. Soldiers are at the front and back, escorting the settlers.

Palestinian kids watching the tour. The kid on a bike was unable to get home for over 20 minutes because the tour moved very slowly and Palestinians were for the most part not able to get by.

A Palestinian man, after being forced to stand at the side for the tour.

Settler woman with dog. In Arabic culture, dogs are considered unclean. Bringing a dog to an Arab market is as considerate of the people there as bringing a pig would be to a Jewish (or Arab) one.

Not everyone finds the tour fascinating, including some of the soldiers who are escorting it.

Soldiers fanning out across the market. Palestinians are forced to either stand to the sides, or if they are allowed to move, must do so clinging to the wall.

Some of the settlers. They don't like being filmed. They would not have such a problem if they weren't disrupting the lives of Palestinians living here on a daily basis.

A Palestinian man and a boy ask to be allowed to get home. Permission was denied, they had to wait for the tour to slowly move by.

A Palestinian woman and girl are allowed to squeeze through in order to get home.

The settlers, being guarded by heavily armed soldiers.

An elderly Palestinian man trying to get home. He had to negotiate and plead with the soldiers. Permission was denied. He had to wait.

Two Palestinians waiting for permission to pass. They also had to wait.

Palestinian kids looking from window of their home at the procession.

Soldiers on the roof, making sure the settlers are safe as they obstruct everyone else's Saturday in the market.
